Reflective learning experiences of nursing students in a COVID-19 disaster simulation: a qualitative study.

Publication date: Jun 11, 2026

This study examined the reflective learning experiences of nursing students who participated in a COVID-19 disaster simulation to inform the development of a standardized disaster nursing simulation module. An exploratory qualitative study used inductive content analysis. Researchers collected data from 78 senior nursing students through reflective journals submitted on an online platform. To ensure trustworthiness, two researchers independently coded the data and reached consensus through iterative discussions. Data from 78 senior nursing students’ reflective journals were analyzed using inductive content analysis. Analysis of 235 core statements revealed four main themes and eight sub-themes: (1) Experiencing disaster situations and learning, (2) Gaps in disaster nursing competency, (3) Understanding community resources and nursing roles, and (4) Professional growth and future educational needs. The data also identified specific gaps in crisis leadership and structured communication during the infectious disease simulation. The results indicate a need for effective hands-on training that supports productive learning while maintaining social distancing. Ongoing development of alternative methods, such as high-fidelity VR, is essential to address clinical gaps and improve future nurses’ disaster preparedness and resilience.
